FOURTEEN

Of all the bad luck.

Part of Robin had known that it was going to happen. Not this exact situation, of course, but something. From the moment that his boss had first shown up at the cabin, he had known that he was going to be put in an awkward situation.

Luckily, Tanner understood. Although Robin had been sure for a moment that he saw pain, hurt, in his lover’s eyes, that was probably not true. Tanner knew what this was more than Robin did. Or, at least, more than his heart did. And what it was, was just a fling. Tanner was doubtless keeping that in mind.

Tanner didn’t seem to take things very seriously. Robin had noticed that about him right away, and at first, it had repulsed him as much as it had fascinated him. Now, it was a blessing.

“I’ll introduce you around,” Robin offered to his boss, and the woman nodded, slipping her blazer off and pulling the bun out of her hair so that it fell around her shoulders and down her back. She tied it back into a simple ponytail and looked better like that, far more comfortable. More casual than he had ever seen her.

“Sorry to crash your party like this. I was driving up to see how you were doing, to touch base. I know that when you’re lost in work, you tend to ignore phone calls and emails,” she told him, and Robin gave a guilty little grin. He had definitely been doing that, and he couldn’t even fault her for her comment. “So I decided to drop by. Got a flat tire. I meant to be here earlier in the day but I only just made it now.”

And it was a damn good thing, for him, at least, that she had been delayed. Otherwise, she probably would have knocked on the door right while Tanner and Robin had been naked and very otherwise occupied.

“It’s no problem. It’s going well, Professor Ramos,” Robin told her, as they went together out to the edge of the patio. She leaned on the wooden railing, face turned to the sun, and every second she spent here seemed to relax her more.

It had been the same with Tanner. He had been uptight and a bit dismissive when he came here, but as time had passed, he had seemed more at home. There was a special sort of magic to this cabin, and the fact that Robin didn’t believe in magic didn’t change that fact. Maybe it was just the influence of nature that was doing it, but he liked it.

“Call me Elizabeth,” she offered, as footsteps came from behind them. Walking toward the short flight of stone stairs that led down toward the dock, Tanner passed by, and then the golden, handsome, impossibly gorgeous Steve. For some reason, Steve irritated Robin, in ways that he wasn’t fully comfortable with exploring. “If I’m putting you forward for tenure, we’re going to have to work closely together. We might as well be friends.
